I traveled to California recently and got to catch up with all my old friends from The Brooks Institute of Photography! While I was there I really wanted to do a styled shoot. I thought of this great idea to take a couple to the Vasquez Rocks and do a scifi themed engagement session. The rocks are gorgeous and known for being in Star Trek, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Adventure, and tons of other great cinema! I hired a fabulous stylist, Maggie SanFilippo, who got all the props and wardrobe I dreamed of and more. I also got my friend Marcelles, from Brooks, and his girlfriend to model for me. Everything was going to be perfect we got to the location and all were really excited about the shoot! We started to take some photos and two seconds later a woman in a security truck pulls up and says we have to have a photo permit to photograph there?! I had no idea you would need this at something in the middle of the desert and apparently theres quite a process to get one and you have to pay a fee. Since I was flying back home the next day my vision was shattered 🙁 Marcelles said he could take us somewhere else that was pretty but it ended up being in the hillside and the temperature was quite chilly not to mention it was very windy. His girlfriend, Kristen, was such an amazing sport wearing small dresses up there. I’m pretty sure it was the love they had for one another that kept them going. So there were lots of shots I had in mind that never happened because we were dealing with the cold when we should have been in the desert. However we did get some great shots so I still wanted to share. Maybe one day I’ll get a permit and go back! Until then…

These look great! That sucks they wouldn’t let you photograph there. Seems like they shouldn’t be able to stop you from enjoying nature, but I guess they have to protect the location somehow?
